Core Aeration

The majority of soils in our area are composed of a heavy, compacted clay base. This does not allow proper air, water and nutrient penetration into the root zone of your turf grass, thus restricting root growth.

Excessive thatch layers can be another problem. Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead grass plant tissue between the soil surface and the grass vegetation. Thatch also prevents air, water and nutrient penetration Core aeration will offset many of the problems caused by poor soil composition and thatch accumulation.

Core aeration is a form of cultivation involving the use of hollow tines to remove soil cores, leaving holes in the soil. After core aeration is performed, the soil cores will be left on the top of the lawn to act as a top dressing. After a brief period of time, the cores will break down.

Core aeration can benefit your lawn in many ways:

  • Reduces thatch buildup
  • Increases water and air movement in the soil
  • Helps relieve soil compaction
  • Helps keep lawn level
  • Increases soil nutrient reservoir
  • Increases the effectiveness of fertilizers and lime
  • Increases root growth

All of these benefits complement each other to give you a healthier, more attractive lawn.
Core aeration is not an exclusive replacement for dethatching. In certain situations, dethatching would be preferred.

A custom Lawn Care Plan will be developed for your lawn.
